When officials in the city of Gainesville, GA decided to update and expand their downtown parking deck they had a bigger picture in mind. The expansion project would coincide with the opening of another major construction project in the city; a $16 million mixed-use development called Parkside on the Square.
To accommodate the residents of the 33 soon-to-be completed luxury condominiums, and the shoppers who would visit the retail units at ground level, more parking space was required.Extending the existing parking deck was going to be no mean feat, and the plan was to add another two levels to the four-story bay.
After a successful bid, the contract was awarded to Carroll Daniel Construction Co., a well-established, trusted construction firm with over 70 years in the business. On a build like this, with pedestrians at street level and a large building to maneuver, access is a serious issue.
Carroll Daniel Construction Co.’s budget allowed for full scaffolding around the parking deck but this option would block access to the existing entrance which had to remain open and useable throughout the expansion process.
Having experienced mastclimbing platforms, from Mastclimbers LLC, on a previous project, Carroll Daniel Construction Co. were sure that mastclimbers with expanded platforms could provide them with the access they would need while minimizing the intrusion to public access into and out of the existing deck.
The system also provided an extreme level of safety to the pedestrians passing by at street level as well as the people working to perform demolition and masonry activities above.
“When we were awarded the parking deck contract, I knew we were going to need a system capable of accessing the upper exterior levels of the existing deck that we could initially use to perform demolition at 80 to 100 feet above street level and later use to install new masonry on the expanded deck,” said Mike Felton, Senior Project Manager at Carroll Daniel Construction Co.
“Ultimately, the mastclimbers performed exactly as we expected and we completed the project safely without incident and on schedule,” he said.
“A win-win which we couldn’t have done without the equipment.”
